Mom’s Diet Determines Baby’s Sex??

May 14th, 2008 · No Comments

“In the quest to select a baby’s sex, success could depend on breakfast cereal and better nutrition, according to a new study that may offer some women another reason to eat their Wheaties.

Mothers-to-be who skip breakfast and eat less are more likely to give birth to girls, while moms who consume more calories and a wider range of nutrients  — including, specifically, those from breakfast cereal — are more likely to deliver sons.

That’s according to new research by British scientists that provides what they say is the first-ever evidence that a mother’s diet at conception may determine her baby’s sex.

Researchers from the universities of Exeter and Oxford in England asked 740 first-time moms in the United Kingdom to keep food diaries before and during early pregnancy. The women didn’t know the sex of their babies, but when researchers reviewed their food plans, they found that moms who consumed more calories of higher quality before conceiving were about 24 percent more likely to give birth to boys than moms who ate less.

“The overall sex ratio in our population was close to 50:50, but individual mothers had a greater chance of bearing male offspring if their nutrient intake was high prior to conception,” wrote Fiona Mathews, the study’s lead author and a research fellow at the University of Exeter. “The consumption of breakfast cereal was also strongly associated with having a male infant.”

Fifty-six percent of women in the group with the highest energy intake gave birth to boys, compared to 45 percent in the group with the lowest energy consumption, according to the study.

Mothers of boys consumed an average of 2,413 calories a day before conception and higher amounts of foods containing potassium, calcium and vitamins C, E and B12, the researchers said. Women who had girls logged 2,283 calories a day and less protein, vitamins and minerals.

Odds of having a boy were much higher for women who ate at least one bowl of breakfast cereal a day compared to women who ate less than one bowl a week, the study said. Breakfast cereals are usually fortified by vitamins and minerals.”

Proper nutrients and nutrition are important for healthy bodies in our everyday lives, regardless if you are trying to eat to determine the sex of your baby.

Toyota Bigger Than GM

May 14th, 2008 · No Comments

”Toyota took the global sales lead from General Motors in the first quarter, capitalizing on growth in China and Europe as GM saw its North American sales drag down gains in other markets.

Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday it sold 2.41 million vehicles in the January-March period, compared with General Motors Corp.’s 2.25 million, prompting one industry analyst to predict that 2008 would be the year Toyota unseats GM in global sales.

Toyota reported steady demand in Asia and strong demand in Europe, while GM said it had record sales in its regions outside of North America.

GM barely won the global sales race with Toyota last year, but Toyota overtook it as the world’s top automaker as measured by global vehicle production in 2007.

The sales numbers didn’t surprise GM. Mike DiGiovanni, the company’s executive director of global markets and industry analysis, said GM expected to be outsold in the first quarter, pointing out that the same thing happened from January through March last year.

He said the company is more focused on turning around its North American operations and becoming profitable worldwide than it is on beating Toyota.

“We obviously want to win, and we’d like to be No. 1 in sales at the end of the year,” he said. “But really our focus right now is on profitable, sustainable growth across the world.”

GM said it posted record sales in three of its four regions, but a 10 percent drop in North America pulled down the overall numbers. Sales were up 8 percent outside of North America, the Detroit automaker said.

A record 64 percent of GM’s sales in the latest quarter came from outside the United States, with the company reporting nearly 20 percent growth in the Latin America, Africa and Middle East region, 6 percent growth for Asia Pacific operations and 3 percent growth in Europe.

GM sold roughly 2.27 million vehicles worldwide in the first quarter of 2007.

The figures show that it’s likely Toyota will outsell GM worldwide this year, even if the U.S. economy recovers in the second half, said Jesse Toprak, chief industry analyst for the auto information site Edmunds.com.”

I am all American, with one exception…..I LOVE Japenese-made cars!!  Honda, Toyota, Nissan are my favorites.  They are known to last for hundreds of thousands of miles, have better resale value and just last longer, in my opinion.  However, I like American trucks.

6 Ways To Lower Your Food Cost

May 14th, 2008 · No Comments

“At the popular cooking Web site Allrecipes.com, visitors want to know one thing: How they can cook for less.

“People are moving away from steak and using ground beef. They’re moving away from salmon and looking to tilapia, a cheaper fish,” says Esmee Williams, vice president of marketing for Allrecipes.com. Recipes for less-expensive dishes such as casseroles and chili have surged in popularity, she says.

Those cooking trends reflect the fact that food prices are rising faster than a cheese soufflé. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports an almost 5% annual growth rate for food eaten at home, with items such as cereals up more than 9%. “

  1. Plan ahead.
  2. Do it yourself.
  3. Rediscover eggs and beans.
  4. Go meatless.
  5. Reinvent leftovers.
  6. Use what’s in the fridge.

You can read the rest of the story here…..   http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/SmartSpending/ConsumerActionGuide/SixWaysToLowerYourFoodCosts.aspx

I don’t know how people can afford cereal, at $4-5 for a box.  I am a bargain hunter in all areas and when I am food shopping, it is no different for me.  I am always looking for something on sale or cheaper.  Go meatless??  Our bodies are meant to have PROTEIN!!

World Food Bank Prices Are Rising

May 14th, 2008 · No Comments

”Afghan food sellers wait for customers at the market in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Tuesday. Afghanistan has allocated $50 million to buy food from neighboring countries, an official said Tuesday, amid skyrocketing prices of food staples like wheat.

LONDON - Ration cards. Genetically modified crops. The end of pile-it-high, sell-it-cheap supermarkets.

These possible solutions to the first global food crisis since World War II — which the World Food Program says already threatens 20 million of the poorest children — are complex and controversial. And they may not even solve the problem as demand continues to soar.

A “silent tsunami” of hunger is sweeping the world’s most desperate nations, said Josette Sheeran, the WFP’s executive director, speaking Tuesday at a London summit on the crisis.

The skyrocketing cost of food staples, stoked by rising fuel prices, unpredictable weather and demand from India and China, has already sparked sometimes violent protests across the Caribbean, Africa and Asia.

The price of rice has more than doubled in the last five weeks, she said. The World Bank estimates food prices have risen by 83 percent in three years.

“What we are seeing now is affecting more people on every continent,” Sheeran told a news conference.”

You can read the rest of the story here…….  http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24262084

Rising food prices are hitting every country and everyone.  No one should ever have to be without food.  I blame the rising food cost on the high oil prices, which is skyrocketing the gas prices.

Do You Suffer With Thyroid Disease??

May 6th, 2008 · No Comments

I am sooooo excited about a recent discovery that I made and I wanted to share it with the world and especially others with thyroid disease or other health issues.  I am was diagnosed as hypothyroid, having a goiter and multi-nodules.  I have had thyroid disease for the past 8 years.  I have experienced most every known thyroid symptom known to man.

I had always been told that having a goiter was not due to an iodine deficiency, since we have iodized salt.  I had always believed what I was told, till I ran across this article that is a MUST read……even if you don’t have thyroid disease…..you MUST read it and learn what all iodine can do for you.

I accidently stumbled across an article on the internet when looking for something else.  I want you to read this   v e r y   c a r e f u l l y   !!  Here is the link so you can read the same article that I read.   www.naturalnews.com/023107.html  This article has truly opened my eyes to the possibility of what this mineral can do for me.

This reallllly has me to thinking lately.  Mannatech’s Ambrotose that I take and get results from is made from a type of seaweed and seaweed is a natural source of iodine.

Then I went to David Brownstein’s….the doc from the article, website, where I ordered his book on iodine.  Still waiting on it to get here.  Here is his website  http://www.drbrownstein.com/

Here is the website that I found that had organic iodine and ordered some from.    http://www.wonwithnature.com/won-iodine.html  Just ordered it today, so hopefully I will get it by Friday.

I don’t make any money from any of these links if you order from them!!  Just to be up front with you.

I just can’t get over all that iodine has the potential of doing for so many different health problems, symptoms, illnesses…..even CANCER!!   WOW!!!

Airlines Are Losing Money

May 3rd, 2008 · 1 Comment

“Delta and Northwest, seeking to combine to create the world’s largest airline, posted losses Wednesday totaling $10.5 billion for the first three months of the year due to exorbitant fuel prices and write-downs of their companies’ value.

“All airlines are in the same boat,” said Calyon Securities analyst Ray Neidl. “The industry cannot make money at the current ticket fare levels. Seats have to come out of the market. To cover higher fuel costs, air fares have to go up.”

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines Inc., the nation’s third-largest carrier, said its loss widened in the first quarter to a whopping $6.39 billion. A few hours later, Eagan, Minn.-based Northwest Airlines Corp. reported a $4.1 billion loss for the period.

Delta’s results badly missed Wall Street expectations, despite a 12 percent increase in sales.

Excluding special items — primarily a $6.1 billion non-cash charge relating to the drop in Delta’s market value due to sustained record fuel prices — the airline lost $274 million in the first quarter.

Northwest took a $3.9 billion charge of its own related to its market value decline. Its loss came despite a 9 percent increase in sales, and Northwest, too, missed analysts’ earnings expectations.

Excluding the accounting charge and losses from some fuel hedges, Northwest said it would have lost $191 million in the quarter.”

The price of oil and gas is hurting all industries.

Are You Cutting Your Life Short By Being Overweight??

May 3rd, 2008 · 1 Comment

“Thanks largely to medical and public health advances, Americans are living longer than ever. The average life expectancy in 2005, the latest year for which figures are available, was nearly 78. That’s up from 47 in 1900 and 68 in 1950.

But even as the market for anti-aging pills and products has never been hotter with Americans seeking a longer life, some experts say we as a nation are doing ourselves in with our couch-potato culture of eating way too much and exercising far too little. Some health professionals even raise the controversial notion that today’s generation of kids like Justin — about a third of whom are overweight or obese — may be the first to live shorter lives than their parents.

Living Longer in America

What’s your chance of reaching a very old age? That can depend on when you were born and even where you live. Click to find out more.

In 2005, Olshansky and colleagues published a paper in The New England Journal of Medicine predicting that in the coming decades, the obesity epidemic and its health consequences would reverse the upward longevity curve in America over the last century, slashing life expectancy by two to five years — more than the impact of cancer or heart disease.

Olshansky says he’s particularly concerned about obesity in children, which has tripled since 1970, because they could be dealing with diabetes, heart disease and other weight-related health problems for a longer period of time and face a greater toll.

Predicting the future, of course, is a rather uncertain science. And researchers studying life expectancy may use different methods to go about it.

Olshansky’s team, for instance, based their forecast on the prevalence of obesity and on reports of the years of life lost from it. They estimated the effect of obesity on life expectancy for the U.S. population based on reductions in death rates that would occur if everyone who was obese would lose enough weight to have an optimal body mass index (BMI). “

There is no such thing as being healthy and overweight.  Only you can make the decision to lose the weight, to have better health and to live longer.  Cleasning regularly will allow you to have a healthy weight.
