Ridiculous

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

I get this flyer in the mail from Kohl’s department store. It says that tomorrow, the day after Thanksgiving, that Kohl’s will open at 4:00 a.m. I don’t get it. Why would Kohl’s spend all that extra money to open hours earlier than it normally does, and why does someone have to be in the store at 4:00 a.m., when there is a month until Christmas. I doubt that there will be many people in the store that early. It seems like really bad business.

I was in a Sports Authority store about a week ago. There was a sign at the store that it would be open on Thanksgiving. I think that is ridiculous. I think that The Sports Authority store will lose a lot of money because so few people will be shopping on Thanksgiving, and why in the world does anyone have to shop on Thanksgiving Day, can’t they go the day before or the day after?

Joe Torre - Who’s Got it Better Than Him

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Being that I am a big Yankee fan, I am disappointed that Joe Torre is no longer with the Yankees. However, I hope his team the Los Angeles Dodgers, wins the National League Championship Series that begins tonight in Philadelphia, and advances to the World Series. Torre is also a part owner of the horse Vineyard Haven that won the Futurity Stakes at Belmont Park this past Saturday, and the horse is the favorite for next year’s Kentucky Derby. I think that all Joe has to do now is short the stock market with the way it’s been dropping. Who knows, maybe he is doing that.  Good Luck Joe!!!

Government Waste

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

The other day I read an article on government waste in  the January 2008 issue of Reader’s Digest. According to the magazine, the government wastes nearly one trillion dollars of  our tax money every year. The waste is broken down into 10 categories:

1. Tax Shortfall - $352.5 billion

2. Wasteful Health Spending - $537.5 billion

3. Wasteful Military Spending - $637.5 billion

4. Wasteful Farm Subsidies - $657.5 billion

5. Wasteful Capital Spending - $687.5 billion

6. General Fraud and Stupidity - $689.5 billion

7. Pork Barrel Spending - $709.5 billion

8. Corporate Welfare - $759.5 billion

9. Obsolete, redundant programs - $789.5 billion

10. Interest on National Debt - $983.5 billion

Total $983.5 billion

This is absolutely mind blowing. I hope whoever is elected in November will do something about this enormous problem, instead of creating ways to get more money out of the taxpayers to fund the government’s waste and corruption.

Ridiculous

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

I read an article in the Star Ledger newspaper the other day about a guy jogging around the track at the high school in Berkeley Heights. There are signs around the track telling  people that bicycles are prohibited  on the track.  Two young children were riding their BMX bikes on the track, completely disregarding the sign. The jogger tactfully asked the children to ride outside the track. Within seconds a parent of the kids came out and scolded the jogger for talking to his kids. The jogger showed the parent the sign regarding bicycles not being allowed on the track. The parent reacted like a jerk and told his kids to resume riding their bikes on the track.

It’s hard to believe a parent could raise his kids like that. How can a parent not raise his kids to abide by the rules we have in our society. I don’t get it. I guess it’s because the parent doesn’t care about rules. Pretty sad, for the parent and the kids.

Unbelievable

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

I read in the Star Ledger newspaper today, that an eight year old girl was ejected from a junior tennis tournament in New Zealand. She was ejected because she was wearing a radio earpiece to receive instructions from her father.

This is a sad story. I feel really bad for the father. He has to be so obsessed with his daughter’s success to cheat like he did. Also, he is sending a very bad message to his daughter, and she is only eight years old. The father should tell his daughter what a bad thing he did, for his good and his daughter’s good.

Golf Joke

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

Joe got home from his Sunday round of golf later than normal and very tired. “Bad day at the course?” his wife asked.

“Everything was going fine” Joe said. “Then Harry had a heart attack and died on the tenth tee.”

“Oh that’s awful” his wife said.

“You’re not kidding. For the whole back nine it was hit the ball, drag Harry, hit the ball, drag Harry”.

All Star Game, ETC

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

I was into the All Star Game last night because it was at Yankee Stadium. I even watched the pregame stuff which lasted about two hours. Being that I am a Yankee fan, I was glad the American League won. It was great seeing some of the Hall of  Fame players in the pregame show;  guys like Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Ernie Banks, Goose Gossage, Cal Ripken, Willie McCovey, Bob Feller. I love seeing those guys. I was disappointed some guys were  missing: guys like Tom Seaver, Sandy Koufax, Nolan Ryan, Joe Morgan. It was great seeing George Steinbrenner there. He was so emotional. You can tell how much he loves New York, Yankee Stadium, baseball, and the Yankees. Unfortunately he did not look well.  It was nice how there was a tribute to Bobby Murcer at the game. He was a great guy that died too young.

I still can’t believe this is the last year for Yankee Stadium and that it’s going to be torn down. It’s such a  historic place, it’s hard to believe in a few months it will not exist.

I’m looking forward to the second half of the baseball season.  I’m hoping the Yankees can be more consistent. I am sure they will make  some changes to the team through trades. minor league callups, or signing players that have been released by other teams. It will be interesting to see how the Mets do after winning their last 9 games before the All Star Break. The Dodgers are another team that interests me because of Joe Torre managing there.

Hey

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Hi everyone. Hope you all had a great fourth of July weekend. I went to my sister’s for  a family party. It was great. I got to see some relatives and friends that I do not see too often.

I saw the two Wimbledon championship matches on Saturday and Sunday. They were both great. I think the match on Sunday won by Rafael Nadal over Roger Federer was the greatest tennis match I’ve ever seen. It lasted almost five hours, and at the end of the match they were playing like they just started. It’s incredible how well conditioned these guys are. They must train like maniacs. The match between the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, was great too. Both of them played well. I was surprised Venus won, as Serena is considered to be the better player.

The Yankees game last night was very good too.  Brett Gardner, a rookie who is batting .143, drove in Robinson Cano in the 10th inning to win the game.  And speaking of New York teams,  Fernando Tatis  of the Mets hit a  2-run homer in the 12th inning against the Phillies to win the game.

A good weekend for fun and sports.

Husband and Wife Joke

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

A husband and wife went to the fairgrounds. The wife wanted to go on the Ferris wheel, but the husband didn’t want to. So the wife went on the ride by herself.

The wheel went round and round and suddenly the wife was thrown out and landed in a heap at her husband’s feet.

“Are you hurt?” he asked.

“Of course I’m hurt!” she replied. “Three times around and you didn’t wave once!”.

Belmont Stakes

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

What can you say, the Belmont Stakes yesterday was a shock, but that’s horse racing. Big Brown looked like a sure winner, but finished last.

I wonder if Big Brown’s handlers will ever find out what was wrong with him. There are a number of possibilities. Maybe the intense heat and humidity got to him, maybe it was the mile-and-a-half distance of the race, maybe the hoof problem he had was the cause. Maybe he bled internally, maybe he had a headache or a bellyache, maybe he did not like the surface of the race track. Maybe he just didn’t feel like running yesterday, maybe he just had a bad day like we all do.

My theory is it was a combination of two things. The first being that the grind of 3 races; the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes in a five week period got to him. The second being that because of the hoof problem he had, he could not train sufficiently for the Belmont.

I just hope we see him race again, maybe next in the Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in New York. But you never know. Being that he is much more valuable in breeding than in racing, maybe he will never race again. That would be unfortunate for all horse racing fans. We will see.
