Advocate for trafficking survivors…

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Join the team at Not For Sale in advocating for the rights of trafficking survivors in Washington DC!

The T Visa came into law with the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) of 2000. It was introduced to protect women, children and men who are survivors of human trafficking. The T Visa is a significant benefit for survivors, yet the legislation does not do enough to protect survivors and has been poorly implemented. If we are going to put an end to slavery within the United States, we must offer protection and a future for the survivors. Join the Not For Sale team in Washington DC on October 8 - 9/2008 to advocate for more effective implementation of these important T-Visas.

While in DC, you will:

1. Participate in advocacy workshops focused around the principles of “smart activism”

2. Hear from a trafficking survivor

3. Discuss human trafficking with leading public officials and with the NFS team

4. Learn how to “map slavery” in your local region

5. Advocate for an improved T Visa program

Our mission: Make modern-day slavery, trafficking survivors, and the T-visa program priorities in 2008/09 for DC decision-makers.

Will you join us?

Spaces are limited. Sign-up soon for Not For Sale Advocacy Days! We look forward to meeting you there.

Together in the cause,

The Not For Sale Campaign

Internet Crimes Against Children, The Utah Task Force

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Capt. Rhett McQuiston the man that leads (ICAC-TF) stopped by on Tuesday, to share with us tips and advice on how to help keep our children safe…

Capt. Rhett McQuiston of the Utah Attorney General’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC-TF) began his career with the ICAC-TF as a part-time assignment on March 1, 2000. Since that time he has served as a full-time ICAC-TF investigator, acting Section Chief, Assistant Section Chief and in November 2007, he was promoted to Captain of the ICAC-TF.

The ICAC-TF is a multi-jurisdictional task force that includes federal, State and Local law enforcement officers across the State of Utah. Capt. McQuiston has been involved in arresting well over 200 individuals for the crime of Enticing A Minor Over the Internet, a Second Degree Felony as well as multiple cases involving Manufacturing, Distributing, Possession of Child Pornography.

Capt. McQuiston also serves as an investigator on the State of Utah “Child Abduction Response Team” (CART). The CART team is a multi-jurisdictional squad that is called into service once a child is missing and believed to have been abducted. To contact the ICAC-TF to request an Internet safety presentation and/or report a crime, please call (801) 514-4287.

Here are some of the answers to questions that CHWradio.com asked him during our interview…

CHWradio.com
Q 1: What is it that excites you about what you are doing as the Captain of the Utah Attorney General’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC-TF)?

Rhett:
Working with the Utah Attorney General’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force is the most rewarding work I have ever done in law enforcement. That is not to say there are not bad days and tough cases; however, the felling that you have stopped a person who is into sexual abusing children is a very powerful feeling and the hope is that because of our teams effort there is a child and family out there that will never know the horrors of child sexual abuse because this person was arrested in a pro-active case.

CHWradio.com
Q 2: What comes to mind when you hear the phrase, “Responsible Cybercitizen“? And how important do you feel it is to be a “Responsible CyberCitizen”

Rhett:
The first thing I think of when I hear Responsible CyberCitizen, is a person who cares about society and understands that what happens on the Internet can have serious real world ramifications. The responsible cybercitizen is very important because law enforcement cannot be everywhere in cyberspace and we need individuals who will report those who are preying on children and/or involved in any other criminal activity. The Internet is so huge, so vast, that it would be like having only one police officer in the entire State of Utah to respond to all the crimes, car accidents, life threatening situations and etc.

Therefore, Responsible CyberCitizens can and do play a vital role in helping protect children who are on-line.

Craigslist finally responds to public pressure…

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

To all our supporters,

Here at the CHW and at Love146, we want to thank all of you for your efforts in voicing your concern about the misuse of Craigslist to traffic women and children!

craigslistheader.jpg

On March 27, a press release from the Connecticut Attorney General’s Office stated that Attorney General Richard Blumenthal today demanded that Craigslist purge apparent, often graphic solicitations for prostitution rampant on certain sections of its website.

Shortly after, Craigslist announced that they have implemented a phone verification system which has drastically lowered the volume of erotic services ads—by 80%! This is specified in their official blog: http://blog.craigslist.org/#phone

Though, we haven’t noticed any dramatic difference in the quantity and presentation of the advertisements in the Erotic Services Section so far, nevertheless we are enthused at Craigslist’s initiative towards reforming it’s (in)famous section.craigslistbox.jpg

We applaud Mr. Buckmaster’s gesture towards rectification. Therefore, Love146 will officially call off the boycott that we initiated at the onset of this year. However, we want to encourage you to continue supporting our campaign to eradicate child sex trafficking and exploitation completely on Craigslist site. Visit our Take Action page on more ways you can engage Craigslist.

We have achieved yet another milestone in regards to our Craigslist campaign:
The formation of the End Internet Trafficking Coalition (EITC, www.eitcoalition.org). Coalition members include Students & Artists Fighting to End Human Slavery, The Barnaba Institute, and FAIR Fund.

EITC is a national coalition whose mission is to prevent sexual violence and human trafficking via the internet. The EITC achieves this by providing a platform to link nonprofit, governmental, law enforcement, faith-based, and student grassroots agencies and individuals to advocate an accessible worldwide web where children, youth, and adults are better protected from human trafficking in all its forms.

EITC will build on our existing Craigslist Campaign to address the use of the internet for human trafficking. The EITC will also subsume all Craigslist campaign related activity.

To join our coalition or share your ideas, please email info@eitcoalition.org

Upcoming events for End Internet Trafficking Coalition:

A web conference in May 2008 with the U.S. Health and Human Services Rescue and Restore Campaign Description: An interactive discussion on the use of the internet to proliferate human trafficking, with an emphasis on the use of the Erotic Services section on Craigslist. To participate in either of these conferences, please email info@eitcoalition.org.

Public Forum in September 2008– San Francisco, CA
Description: A discussion forum involving social activists, media and press representatives, and Jim Buckmaster, CEO of Craigslist

For more information on our campaign, please visit: http://www.eitcoalition.org/

For press releases related to sex trafficking and exploitation on Craigslist,

Trust me you would not believe some of the things you will hear when you listen to the CHWradio.com interview, and that is just the tip of the iceberg… folks we need to get involved and start by attending your local school board meetings and see who is running the show… become VOCAL in your LOCAL area!!!

Parents are not Powerless!

Also, enforce your (Parental Responsibility) by monitoring your child’s behavior online and offline… keep them safe and smart:)

Kids, Violence, and the Internet: Tips for Parents

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

This week, a shocking video was released that shows the savage 30-minute beating of a teen who had allegedly trash-talked her attackers on her MySpace page. According to the Pope County Florida Sheriff’s office, two boys stood guard outside a home while a group of offended girls took their revenge and videotaped the savagery that followed.

Kids may or may not hear about this horrifying incident, but it brings up critical issues that should be addressed with teens. It offers a powerful opportunity for parents to have a conversation with their children about three critical realities kids must be aware of in this age of the computer and the ability to instantly create videos.

Actions have consequences — cyberbullying is unacceptable.
Talk to your kids about what they say on their MySpace or Facebook or blog pages. Remind them that what they say is public, and if it’s harassing, humiliating, threatening, or disrespectful, consequences can result. [Read More]

China Olympics Give New Opportunity for Anti-Slavery Work

International scrutiny of China is at an all-time high as we come closer to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Companies with operations or supply chains in China have a choice: lead by example or risk the media spotlight being turned on you. Having just returned from China, I can assure you there is increased sensitivity on the ground to international scrutiny. Further evidence: Just last month Nike released a corporate responsibility report focused exclusively on its supply chain in China, citing the increased attention from the Beijing Olympics as the main reason for its publication.
