Federal Order of Police Awarded Karen Lodrick

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

A very special friend of the CyberHood Watch, was awarded the Meritorious Certificate from the FOP (Fraternal Order of Police), California Federal Lodge 21, in recognition of her meritorious service.

FOP Award

In her own words:

It seems so surreal to me that I would be honored for something I felt so compelled to do without any notion it would lead to such reward. But it was special and something I will never forget. I will reflect on it with great appreciation and thanks always.

FYI, Karen has recently just finished a complete makeover of her FightingBackNow.com website, and she has also updated the site with a new blog format…. go here to read and find new daily insights from the Karen Lodrick Blog

You can also hear the interview that we did with Karen, on the CHWradio.com a couple of months ago…

She is also writing a book of her experience, so check back often and will update you as soon as the book becomes available…

Wacky Internet Predator Wednesday, VI

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

My favorite day of the week!

as Ken Shallcross says;

Let these 3 scumbags be a reminder to parents that monitoring software like PC Pandora is essential in today’s Internet world. Thankfully no real minors were hurt here as far as we know – who knows who these guys got to prior to being arrested. These guys do exist and they are out there. Know what your kids are doing online and who they are talking to. Don’t be a passive and removed parent - be a powerful and effective one with PC Pandora.

A Stilwell, Okla., man planning to take his family on a summer vacation early Saturday morning was instead an inmate at the Crawford County Detention Center.

Less than four hours before he was scheduled to leave for the beaches of South Carolina, David Wayne Fuson, 34, was arrested for computer exploitation of a child, according to Chief Deputy Ron Brown of the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department.

CyberBullying is Real, and it HURTS…

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

Just ask Amy Ryan…

She will tell you her story, and it’s hard to believe this even happens in these days of plenty, in the USA!!!

But, I’m sure if we really know what happens with our children on a daily basis in the school systems we would be SO shocked to say the least…

Please listen to her story and download the accompanying pdf and share this story with friends and family and especially your children!

Please teach your children RESPECT…

Responsibility
Enthusiasm
Speaking with sincerity
Popularity without pressure (PEER)
Entrepreneur
you’re, your own boss!
Closeness with all, use clarity
Tell others to use RESPECT

The key to managing conflict is to bring participants together and ask them to listen to the other party’s perspective. Listening leads to understanding. I believe the human condition is one of compassion if there is more validation and less accusation. [Read More…]

Here are 2 of the 15 or so questions that Amy answered for our CHWradio.com interview!

1.) What comes to mind when you think of what a “Responsible CyberCitizen” would be and how would a responsible cybercitizen deal with CyberBullying?

There are so many different ways I can think of to describe what it means to be a “responsible CyberCitizen”. As a parent, I feel it is a necessity to know & understand computers well enough to enjoy their many benefits, while at the same time, to be aware of all the dangers associated with the internet, especially when dealing with youths. I personally do my best to model appropriate internet behavior with my children. I allow them limited access to the internet and they also know that our computers are filtered & that I can access the pages they visit at any time. My son is allowed to have a Facebook account but he has to provide me the password, it’s a trade off, he get’s to use my computers but I get to monitor his internet behavior. In doing so, I do not scold him when I feel he’s being unsafe or not using his head, instead we discuss why I’m not comfortable with his internet behavior, and work towards a mutual understanding of why that behavior is not acceptable (unsafe or hurtful).

I constantly discuss with my children the importance of being careful while on the computer, we talk about current events that concern teens/children & the internet, & are continually trying to stay on top of how easy it is to become caught up in something that you can’t easily get out of while on the internet. This goes both ways, I caution them about what they are putting out there as well as being cautious of others on the net, & on how to get themselves out of a difficult situation when needed.

The main thing about being a responsible CyberCitizen is to be AWARE & to spread AWARENESS across every platform possible.

2.) As parents, what is the single most important thing we should tell our teen about CyberBullying?

From what we experienced, as well as what I’ve learned since this experience, is that youths tend to be braver online than they are in person. A youth, young teens especially, tend to make very bold statements online that are public & draw quite a bit of attention. They often don’t know how to get themselves out of what they’ve started, so they either keep it going, or worse, they act it out in reality. I also think that they don’t understand how their words affect the person they are bullying. They often don’t really mean what they are saying or doing and they assume that everyone else is on board with them.

As a parent, & as a teacher, I do my best to talk with my kids & students about how teasing/bullying affects the one being bullied & about real life situations where this type of bullying has lead to real life tragedies. It is very important that out teens understand the severity of their actions, & how others are affected by them. To Read the Rest or to print, Click Here

Thanks Amy, for teaching all of us that even when things seam like they all going against us that we can endure, and be a teacher for others, and especially our friends and families…

Virus Games by author G.L. Sheerin

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

What an incredible guest on our show today, the 3rd of June… We were recently contacted to do an interview with author G.L. Sheerin about his brand new book called “Virus Games” so David and I jumped at the chance to help children gain a better understanding of the internal workings of the internet but also for us bigger kids as well to have some fun and re-live our Hardy Boys days and a chance to learn from a real internet security professional, as well. Gary shared why he wrote his brand new and this very interesting and “current topics” book about what he does everyday, for a living!

Virus Games

Fool-proof net safety, with author G.L. Sheerin… Today’s stomping grounds aren’t like the ones of yesteryear. In a world where kids would rather surf the net rather than the neighborhood, the burden to protect their kids online often leaves parents looking for net-safety solutions while trying to keep up with their ever-changing, tech-savvy kids. To help your listeners stay net safe and savvy, Internet technology professional and children’s author G.L. Sheerin uses his extensive experience as both an I.T. professional and a father to share insight on how to keep kids safe online. Sheerin is the author of the fictional children’s book “Virus Games” (Synergy Books, 2008) – part of the Peter’s Packet book series – and incorporates technology in a fun, light-hearted adventure story, while teaching children computer concepts. Sheerin has been a featured guest on “Tampa Bay’s 10 News this Morning” and syndicated radio show “Nexus Found.”

In our interview, Sheerin will discuss: - Staying net safe through the summer months - Parenting a generation of “digital natives” (kids who have never known life without cell phones, laptops and the Internet) - I want to be an IT guy: How to foster your kid’s tech savvy - How to encourage reading among young boys…

This young boy looks forward to finishing reading the book and as soon I as do, I will update this post and tell you how the book ended :) well OK, I will just give you my thoughts and review… if the book is 1/10th as good as the interview we had with Gary, then I am sure, I’m in for a real treat…

Please listen to this interview as Gary shares, his ideas and thoughts on security issues of the day, and his many years of experience in the world of internet security and big business…

We Would like to send a special thank you, out to Shelby Sledge, she is the Publicist for G.L. Sherrin and she works for Phenix & Phenix Literary Publicists 2100 Kramer Ln. Suite 300 Austin, TX 78758 (512) 478-2028 ext. 227 ssledge@phenixpublicity.com, at www.phenixpublicity.com, she is the one that made this interview possible, and you can contact her, with the above information…

Many Thanks again, to G. L. for making this a great day, at the CyberHood Watch…
