Playgrounds, have moved into our living rooms of our homes, are you locking the Virtual DeadBolts before your children play…
FBI officials are investigating a number of cases in which sexual predators have used online gaming systems including Wii, PlayStation and Xbox to find victims. According to FBI forensic examiner Douglas Roden, online gaming communities are the “new hunting ground” where predators prey upon children.
“Where kids play, the predators are going to prey. All the latest technologies and all the latest games are going to draw the predators and the kids to the same places.”

Late last year, the FBI arrested a 30-year old Dayton, Ohio, woman who allegedly used an Xbox 360 to send naked pictures of herself to a 16-year old in Arizona. Police said she then was able to persuade the teen to send her naked pictures of him. (”Video Games New Frontier for Sexual Predators.” WAPT.com News (ABC). 1 May 2008.
Parents may not realize that gaming consoles operate in much the same way as a computer or that savvy kids can bypass parental controls. As Marc Rogers, director of Purdue University’s Cyber Forensic Lab said, “Police who have been doing stings in Internet chat rooms for years now are going undercover to catch predators playing interactive games ranging from Grand Theft Auto to old fashioned chess and checkers”.
Earlier this year, a man in Utah was charged with sexual exploitation of a minor for enticing a 12-year old boy he met through an online game into having sex.
In December, Michigan prosecutors convicted Adam Glenn Schroeder of criminal sexual conduct with a minor and using a computer to commit a crime. He used World of Warcraft to lure a 12-year-old girl into having sex with him. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
In another case, a 10 year old boy playing the Halo Xbox game got a video message from a man that showed adults engaged in a sex act. (Koch, Wendy. “Predators use gaming consoles to ‘get foot in the door.’” USA Today. 2 July 2008.
The guest on this show was Dr. Robert Kirk, an independent consultant for major health care organizations. Dr. Kirk has worked with hundreds of millions of dollars with these companies and has a lot of experience that he wants to share. His company was started up to help organizations better deal with their money and resist fraud. Listen to the interview here:
He recently has been working against cyberspace fraud, specifically in the financial means. Late in his career Dr. Kirk was sued with a “slap suit” which is often used by large companies to try to intimidate critics. Slap suits have been used against other companies and individuals, and could possible even reach home based business owners working on the internet. Slap suits generally come in the form of deformation or libel suits and can cost the defendant thousands of dollars, even if the suit is based on thin air. This is a common scam that is often successfully run that people need to be aware of. There are several of scams out there that families or individuals can fall prey to. Keep yourself safe with, [Managed PC Care…]
It’s important to learn how to avoid and watch out for such scams. A common scam that is run is spam. There are billions of e-mails sent out everyday broadcasting business or investment opportunities. This is an incredibly cheap way to contact millions of people. Scam artists today are a lot different than they used to be. Scam artists are organized businesses now. Scam artists main attraction is to offer you something big (money, trips, etc) with little or no effort on your part. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is! The reason people often fall prey to such scams is that they have a desire to trust people.
Scam artists know this and work hard to gain the trust of their victims, then are able to scam them better. There are several ways to avoid scams, however. First, check your facts. Take a step back from the situation and learn about it more, talk to your lawyer, financial advisor, or another independent source. Whatever you do, don’t make snap decisions. One way to check your facts is to use Google, which has become a great resource for finding information on just about everything. Another thing to do is to wait. If it’s a good deal today, it will still be a good deal tomorrow.
Take your time and think it over!
Children also fall prey to scams easy. The key to children avoiding scams is education. Kids need to be educated against scams, as do their parents and family. The more education available to everyone on the subject, the more scams will be avoided. Laws on the subject of scamming are nearly nonexistent. Though the laws are on the books, they are often times not enforced. The reasons for this don’t lie in funding alone, but in a lack of desire to create such laws.
Things like cyber-bullying are new and often times not taken seriously.
Complacency is often the biggest issue, because victims don’t want to come forward if they’re mistreated by those in charge and those in charge need to take victims seriously. As long as everyone is complacent and doesn’t work for change, then nothing will change. One of the biggest problems is that victims of scams are often not heard from. The victims often lose their money and privacy, but don’t have a means to bring this to people’s attentions.
One way to make people realize how often scams happen is to organize and share. Once the public is more aware of it they need to organize and put pressure on elected officials. Without pressure elected officials will most likely look in the other direction. It is the responsibility of the public to challenge the complacency of elected officials, because without the public pressure, nothing will change.

What an incredible guest on our show today, the 3rd of June… We were recently contacted to do an interview with author G.L. Sheerin about his brand new book called “Virus Games” so David and I jumped at the chance to help children gain a better understanding of the internal workings of the internet but also for us bigger kids as well to have some fun and re-live our Hardy Boys days and a chance to learn from a real internet security professional, as well. Gary shared why he wrote his brand new and this very interesting and “current topics” book about what he does everyday, for a living!
Fool-proof net safety, with author G.L. Sheerin… Today’s stomping grounds aren’t like the ones of yesteryear. In a world where kids would rather surf the net rather than the neighborhood, the burden to protect their kids online often leaves parents looking for net-safety solutions while trying to keep up with their ever-changing, tech-savvy kids. To help your listeners stay net safe and savvy, Internet technology professional and children’s author G.L. Sheerin uses his extensive experience as both an I.T. professional and a father to share insight on how to keep kids safe online. Sheerin is the author of the fictional children’s book “Virus Games” (Synergy Books, 2008) – part of the Peter’s Packet book series – and incorporates technology in a fun, light-hearted adventure story, while teaching children computer concepts. Sheerin has been a featured guest on “Tampa Bay’s 10 News this Morning” and syndicated radio show “Nexus Found.”
In our interview, Sheerin will discuss: - Staying net safe through the summer months - Parenting a generation of “digital natives” (kids who have never known life without cell phones, laptops and the Internet) - I want to be an IT guy: How to foster your kid’s tech savvy - How to encourage reading among young boys…
This young boy looks forward to finishing reading the book and as soon I as do, I will update this post and tell you how the book ended well OK, I will just give you my thoughts and review… if the book is 1/10th as good as the interview we had with Gary, then I am sure, I’m in for a real treat…
Please listen to this interview as Gary shares, his ideas and thoughts on security issues of the day, and his many years of experience in the world of internet security and big business…
