It’s up to US, when it comes to Developing Communication with our Children…

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

David and I had a wonderful guest on today’s show his name was Carlos Flores, he is a Registered Nurse with over 20 years experience in pediatric emergency and trauma care. He is the Trauma Coordinator for Children’s Hospital Central California in Madera, County. Carlos has researched and spoken extensively on the Choking Game throughout the San Joaquin Valley in the hopes of raising awareness among parents, health care workers, and professional groups who work with children.

Carlos’ list of credentials are very impressive, but what is more impressive is how much he cares about the youth of his community and all youth everywhere, as evidence of his willingness to come on our CHWradio.com live show and take an 1 and 1/2 hours of his very precious time… to share with us his knowledge and experience. Please take the time and listen to the show or download it and listen at your leisure…

The Choking Game is a high risk activity being played by pre-teen and teen kids. This activity causes a self induced loss of consciousness by hypoxia (lack of oxygen) and is responsible for hundreds of deaths worldwide.

GASP

There are a variety of methods that are used, all legal and seemingly innocuous, including a method using ligatures. The first step in prevention is awareness.

Listen to his interview here:

Over the past few months, almost every week, David and I have asked our guests, what is the one thing that as parents we can do to help protect our children from the depths of darkness on the internet and we have asked policemen what to do to keep our children safe online and offline and they all have said the same thing!!!

COMMUNICATION

Time and time again we are reminded that communication is the KEY to solving most of the problems with our children… and it’s not US telling… it’s US listening, and listening every single time our children want US to help them. When we get in the habit of ignoring them that’s when we open the door to not hearing them when they really need help. The odds are that they will not ask US when they really need US the MOST!!! The Choking Game… It’s not a GAME

Monday, March 10th, 2008

On last weeks radio show David and I had a question come in on the chat line and the listener asked about: “The Choking Game” and I thought what does this person want me to ask our guest? Then after asking the question, which Nancy did a great job of answering the question and said that children play all sorts of games that have high risk, and as parents we need to be talking to them about this terrible tragedy just waiting to happen… I asked my wife about this later and she reminded me about a neighbor child who had died from this just a few moths ago in our own little neighborhood, very tragic indeed…

here is a 3 year old video… come on folk’s we got to start getting involved with our CyberHood Watch, and help one another!

So, I went to work this week to find more information and any organizations that dealt with the problem. I found very little information and most of the stories that are highlighted are going back a minimum of 3 to 5 years. This is very disturbing to say the least… I found one organization that looks like they are trying to make a difference and they have some good information and resources, here is their web address:

G.A.S.P.

more info on how bad this really is…

What a terrible way to end a child’s life…. no game should be played where the end results can be death… and we need to change the NAME - it’s not a GAME!

We are working on a Top 10 Taboo Topic’s and Subjects, that have to be talked about before it’s to LATE… a good place to start is getting the list at Take 25 and download the list of 25 Tips… also, you can get the OSA agreement!
