This week, a shocking video was released that shows the savage 30-minute beating of a teen who had allegedly trash-talked her attackers on her MySpace page. According to the Pope County Florida Sheriff’s office, two boys stood guard outside a home while a group of offended girls took their revenge and videotaped the savagery that followed.

Kids may or may not hear about this horrifying incident, but it brings up critical issues that should be addressed with teens. It offers a powerful opportunity for parents to have a conversation with their children about three critical realities kids must be aware of in this age of the computer and the ability to instantly create videos.

Actions have consequences — cyberbullying is unacceptable.
Talk to your kids about what they say on their MySpace or Facebook or blog pages. Remind them that what they say is public, and if it’s harassing, humiliating, threatening, or disrespectful, consequences can result. [Read More]

This story is so disgusting on so many levels. How do you let kids get to the point, mentally, where they want to beat a fellow student so they can tape it and post it online – all because of something someone said about them. What does that say about the effect of the Internet on this generation and their overall values of living in society with others? I remember the taunts and teasings in high school, we taunted back or shrugged it off because, guess what – high school doesn’t matter!!! Why were none of the parents ever monitoring what their kids were doing? I got news for you, parents, filters and blocks don’t work – you need to SEE what they do and be involved. I hope the 8 beaters get a very harsh sentence and I hope this remains a mark on their lives the way the marked their victim’s. Infuriates me that parents let their kids develop mentally like thisTry knowing what your kids are doing with monitoring software (like PC Pandora! :)). It’s the 21st century - you have to use technology and act like a parent!

We here at the CyberHood Watch couldn’t agree more Ken, thanks for your support… and I believe that as a society to think it’s ok to film this behavior, is even worse in some ways than the beatings themselves…
