Virus Games by author G.L. Sheerin

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

What an incredible guest on our show today, the 3rd of June… We were recently contacted to do an interview with author G.L. Sheerin about his brand new book called “Virus Games” so David and I jumped at the chance to help children gain a better understanding of the internal workings of the internet but also for us bigger kids as well to have some fun and re-live our Hardy Boys days and a chance to learn from a real internet security professional, as well. Gary shared why he wrote his brand new and this very interesting and “current topics” book about what he does everyday, for a living!

Virus Games

Fool-proof net safety, with author G.L. Sheerin… Today’s stomping grounds aren’t like the ones of yesteryear. In a world where kids would rather surf the net rather than the neighborhood, the burden to protect their kids online often leaves parents looking for net-safety solutions while trying to keep up with their ever-changing, tech-savvy kids. To help your listeners stay net safe and savvy, Internet technology professional and children’s author G.L. Sheerin uses his extensive experience as both an I.T. professional and a father to share insight on how to keep kids safe online. Sheerin is the author of the fictional children’s book “Virus Games” (Synergy Books, 2008) – part of the Peter’s Packet book series – and incorporates technology in a fun, light-hearted adventure story, while teaching children computer concepts. Sheerin has been a featured guest on “Tampa Bay’s 10 News this Morning” and syndicated radio show “Nexus Found.”

In our interview, Sheerin will discuss: - Staying net safe through the summer months - Parenting a generation of “digital natives” (kids who have never known life without cell phones, laptops and the Internet) - I want to be an IT guy: How to foster your kid’s tech savvy - How to encourage reading among young boys…

This young boy looks forward to finishing reading the book and as soon I as do, I will update this post and tell you how the book ended :) well OK, I will just give you my thoughts and review… if the book is 1/10th as good as the interview we had with Gary, then I am sure, I’m in for a real treat…

Please listen to this interview as Gary shares, his ideas and thoughts on security issues of the day, and his many years of experience in the world of internet security and big business…

We Would like to send a special thank you, out to Shelby Sledge, she is the Publicist for G.L. Sherrin and she works for Phenix & Phenix Literary Publicists 2100 Kramer Ln. Suite 300 Austin, TX 78758 (512) 478-2028 ext. 227 ssledge@phenixpublicity.com, at www.phenixpublicity.com, she is the one that made this interview possible, and you can contact her, with the above information…

Many Thanks again, to G. L. for making this a great day, at the CyberHood Watch…

Once again, Susanne Mitchell shows how time can heal all wounds…

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

What a very special treat for the CyberHood Watch Partners today, as we had the opportunity to host our live radio show and our special guest was Susanne Mitchell from the The Children’s Justice Centers of Salt Lake County… she graciously answered our questions and shared advice for all of our listeners and once again, showed that time heals all wounds… as Susanne pointed out, making a very calming and caring environment for the victims, is the first step in the healing process and especially for the children to feel comfortable to be able to talk about and share their experiences with adults that can help them, and be their advocates through this very difficult time and the long process of recovery!

For more information on who to contact when help is needed, Susanne recommends:
ICAC TASK FORCE

The Internet is the most powerful information tool ever created and can enhance a child’s education like no other resource. However, its very nature creates the potential for danger.

A recent survey revealed that 1 in 5 teens has received an unwanted online request to engage in sexual activities or provide sexual information. One in 4 has been exposed to online pornography. Two-thirds of Utah households have a computer-more than any other state in the country. Almost half of the homes in Utah have Internet access.

What is ICAC?

The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC) is a multi-jurisdictional task force that investigates and prosecutes individuals who use the Internet to exploit children. The task force is funded by a grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and administered through the Utah Attorney General’s Office.

Also, Susanne gave us 8 tips that will help us and our children, maybe even prevent or stop the abuse in it’s tracks, if it’s used… Please sit down with your children and study these wonderful simple tips…

  1. Ask Permission to go anywhere!
  2. Buddy System - Use IT!
  3. Say Stop it!
  4. Be Assertive and Confident
  5. Trust your Instincts :)
  6. Never Keep Secrets (especially from your parents)
  7. Never give out or share personal information… Ever!
  8. Use your Courage!

What a wonderfully simple system of to-do’s that anyone can learn and teach… Communication is the Key!

If you have the time, please check out the opportunities to donate yourself and or make a donation… everyone can make a difference!

Saving one Child at a time!!! Listen to the CHWradio.com for the interview…

It Was Computer Hardware — Then Software — Then The Internet — What Big Trend Is Next?

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

It was the Information Age (1994) and Americans embraced it by accepting electronic access into their homes. The phone remained virtually unchanged; however, computers penetration into homes increased significantly between 1994 and 1997. Personal computers in 1997 increased 52% that was 36.6% of Americans nationwide owned computers.  Modems increased 139%, and email increased 397% (U.S. Dept. of Commerce). Its eleven years later and we all realize that the numbers of computers in the home are significantly higher and the technology is far superior to 1997.

Although the telephone penetration remained slightly unchanged at 98.3% it was slightly higher in the rural areas. The trend in hardware has laid the ground work for what would become the next great trend…Software! (more…)
