David and I had a wonderful guest on today’s show his name was Carlos Flores, he is a Registered Nurse with over 20 years experience in pediatric emergency and trauma care. He is the Trauma Coordinator for Children’s Hospital Central California in Madera, County. Carlos has researched and spoken extensively on the Choking Game throughout the San Joaquin Valley in the hopes of raising awareness among parents, health care workers, and professional groups who work with children.

Carlos’ list of credentials are very impressive, but what is more impressive is how much he cares about the youth of his community and all youth everywhere, as evidence of his willingness to come on our CHWradio.com live show and take an 1 and 1/2 hours of his very precious time… to share with us his knowledge and experience. The Choking Game is a high risk activity being played by pre-teen and teen kids. This activity causes a self induced loss of consciousness by hypoxia (lack of oxygen) and is responsible for hundreds of deaths worldwide.

There are a variety of methods that are used, all legal and seemingly innocuous, including a method using ligatures. The first step in prevention is awareness.

Over the past few months, almost every week, David and I have asked our guests, what is the one thing that as parents we can do to help protect our children from the depths of darkness on the internet and we have asked policemen what to do to keep our children safe online and offline and they all have said the same thing!!!

COMMUNICATION

Time and time again we are reminded that communication is the KEY to solving most of the problems with our children… and it’s not US telling… it’s US listening, and listening every single time our children want US to help them. When we get in the habit of ignoring them that’s when we open the door to not hearing them when they really need help. The odds are that they will not ask US when they really need US the MOST!!!

Sometimes it’s not enough to have good communication you also have to be aware and look for warning signs and red flags. Ask questions, listen for the answers and do research and know what teens and young people are doing. Be informed and help your neighborhood and your community by becoming active in good causes and organizations, because you never know when you will be able to help someone with timely advice or information…

As we were told by Sarah on Tuesday’s show, she is and was a very loving mother, she had good communication with her children and her boy Gabriel. Sarah had some knowledge, but had she been given the right information about The Chocking Game, that she may have been able to help her boy, see her website at Still Loving My Gabriel … Besides good communication with our kids, we also need to help one another and teach each other, especially when it comes to these terrible things that can happen to our little ones… Sarah’s advice to everyone is to not stand by idly, share what you know with other parents and let’s stop the “IGNORANCE” about the Choking Game and other deadly actives and Games Adolescents Shouldn’t Play.

Over the past several years he has seen several cases of what looked like an attempted suicide, that just didn’t look right and so he investigated and found that hundreds if not thousands of kids in the California area alone, are doing these kinds of activities on a regular basis. He has started working closely with many organizations to help prevent this from happening to our children. Carlos believes this type of activity can be stopped with the right type of education. Help support this cause, and share this message of hope. This is one of the most dangerous games in the world today.
