Term of the Day – Link Exchange (Banner Exchange)

Definition – An alternative to automated linking, a Link Exchange is a community of websites, where site owners register their sites on a central Link Exchange’s web site.  The Exchange then provides each registered site with HTML code (links) to insert in to their web page which causes the display of banner ads for the sites of other members of the exchange.  Each registered site then allows the display of banner ads for other sites on the Exchange, in exchange for their site being advertised on the other members’ sites, creating reciprocal links between the sites.

How To Make Money Online With The Internet Marketing Term Of The Day – In order to take advantage of the need for links to rank well in the search engines, a number of Link Exchange sites have been launched.

The HTML code, or banners are downloaded from the exchange’s site. A automated monitor, or counter on the exchange determines, how many times a member web site has displayed the banner advertisements of other members, and credits that member with a number of displays of its banner on other members’ web sites. Link exchanges usually operate on a 2 to 1 exchange ratio. For every two times a member shows a second member’s banner ad, that second member has to display the first member’s banner ad. This page impressions to credits ratio is the exchange rate for each link exchange.

For internet marketers, Link exchanges have advantages and disadvantages. The advantages include bringing in a highly targeted readership (because most exchanges have members with similar web sites), increasing the “link popularity” of a site with the search engines, and of being a consistent way to build links. However, they have the disadvantages of potentially redirecting visitors away to other sites before they view the site that the original link was on.
