Term of the Day - URL (Uniform Resource Locator)

Definition - (Sorry, went a little overboard on this definition, but though you might want to know!) The address, or Location of a resource (web sites and web pages) on the Internet.

A URL includes the protocol (ex. HTTP, FTP), the domain name (or IP address), and additional path information (folder/file). On the Web, a URL may address a Web page file, image file, or any other file supported by the HTTP protocol.

The first portion of the URL (http) designates the protocol that is used to locate the file or resource on the Web. A protocol is a standardized means of communication among machines across a network. Protocols allow data to be taken apart for faster transmission, transmitted, and then reassembled at the destination in the correct order.

The “http” represents the HyperText Transfer Protocol, which is used to transfer Web pages across the Internet to Web browsers such as Mozilla Foxfire, Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer, or Lynx, etc. Other common protocols include https (for secure Web pages-the “S” stands for “secure”), “ftp” (file transfer protocol), and “news” (for newsgroups). The protocol of a URL is followed by a colon and two slashes (://).

The portion of the URL following the protocol (www._______.com) designates the host name of the computer you are accessing. The designator “www”, found in many URLs, is an acronym for World Wide Web. While using “www” is conventional, it is not necessary. Some Web servers omit the need to type “www”. For example, http://www.espn.com and http://espn.com can both work. The right-most designator (e.g., .com, .org, .net, or .edu) describes the type of institution or organization displaying the information (commercial, organization, network, educational, etc.).

Following the host name, and separated by a single forward slash “/”, is the root directory, which can be followed by any number of subdirectories also separated by a single forward slash “/”.

URLs are often important to marketers in that they are part of the phrase “Add URL”, the process of submitting a site or page to another site, usually a search engine or directory. Having keywords in the URL can improve the search engine ranking of the page in the search engines.
