As someone who is following the Oprah internet show featuring Eckhart Tolle’s new book - ‘A New Earth’; I am amazed at how strongly it applies to Home Business Entrepreneurs.

From my experience in business coaching, a huge obstacle to many home business owners is staying on track. Between the many, many distractions, obstacles, disappointments, etc - it is easy to become discouraged and quit.

Eckhart offered more good advice on the March 24th show that is invaluable to the entrepreneur.

He spoke of ‘being transparent’, which means receiving negative feedback (criticism, rejection, etc.) and allowing it to ‘pass through’ ourselves without being effected negatively by it.

When a person criticized, rejected, etc. - the Ego (in its constant need for power and control) – generates negative emotions and judgments to defend its position on the situation. It always wants to ‘be right’ - and it wants the other person to confirm that it’s right.

When this doesn’t happen, the Ego goes into overdrive and we people easily get ’swept up’ in and further engaged in the ego’s tirade. Since everybody’s ego thinks the same way it should be no surprise this causes friction between people.  

‘Opinions’ turn into disagreements, disagreements can turn into arguments, arguments can turn into violence, violence can turn into battles, etc., etc.

With a little consistent effort, we can train our awareness to recognize when the Ego is engaged. When we gain awareness we can then choose - instead of automatically going along with ego’s charade - we can choose to be ‘transparent’ and allow that storm cloud generated by the ego to pass by harmlessly.

That’s right; we choose instead of automatically reacting from Ego.

By doing so we avoid getting bogged down in its drama, its righteousness, and its inflexible opinions. Most of the crap Ego dreams up is just that anyway – crap.
It looks for excuses to be offended, to generate doubt, mistrust, jealousy, and anger.

Since we would ALL be far more pro-active entrepreneurs without those thoughts, you can begin to see the power of Eckhart Tolle’s, ‘A New Earth’.

Eckhart says that we step out of the ego’s ongoing mental chatter we can be present in the current moment – and be far more effective at whatever it is we happen to be doing. It is also the most precious gift we can give ourselves – LIVING in the present moment.

Oprah Winfrey’s new web-cast series is based on a Eckhart Tolle’s new book, ’A New Earth’, is providing excellent insights that can be extremely useful to home based business entrepreneur.

That’s because, being a successful entrepreneur calls for honing some particular skill sets.  One such skill is the ability to minimize the behavior which generates ineffective ‘compliants’.

This is important because the vast majority of complaining that people do has nothing to do with positive change but rather has more to do with emotional venting and seeking of agreement from others regarding one’s complaint.

Voicing a complaint such as, “The copy machine has stopped working”,  is a valid complaint.  It essentially brings up the fact that something is wrong and needs to be addressed.  Having said that; it’s easy to turn a valid comment into any ineffective complaint dripping with drama.

 Oprah and Eckhart spent significant time during the third episode of the new earth discussing how a person’s ego is responsible for these drama complaints and the consequences it produces.

An example of an ineffective complaint is a complaining to another person who has no power to do anything about your complaint. Friends, spouses, co-workers & team-mates are often end up being sounding boards for these issues (like it or not).

Another form of ineffective complaints are those that add the unconscious intention of making someone else wrong, or making yourself ‘right’.

The human ego thrives on its absolute need to be right and to defend that position.  Conflicts between people, families, organizations, and even countries typically stem from egos out of control.

As home based business entrepreneurs are primary focus needs to stay on being effective and getting things done that will move our business forward.

Avoiding getting sucked into, or stuck in a quagmire of opinions, prejudices based on the past, past patterns of behavior, etc. Eckhart is teaching us to recognize the devious mind chatter our ego’s produce in order to keep itself in control of our actions.

Prospecting is a skill new Home Business entrepreneurs struggle with more than any other. All businesses require customers to survive. To acquire customers (and ‘team members’ in Network Marketing) the people need to be exposed to your business. It’s just common sense, but it doesn’t make the process any easier for a person not used to picking up the phone to prospect.
 
Oprah’s special internet show based on Eckhart Tolle’s book, ‘ A New Earth’ offers some wonderful insights that we can apply to helping people who struggle with picking up the phone.

The first two ‘A New Earth’ shows revolved around the human ego and its characteristics. Eckhart teaches that the ego acts like a spoiled little child in many respects. It generates a non-stop conversation in our heads. This chatter is all about ‘identifying’, labeling, judging; and keeping you involved in what it suggests is your Identity.

He offered an example of some people in Japan who when fired from their job actually committed suicide because their ‘identity’ was so attached to their job. We may recognize that level of association to ‘identity’ is silly; but we are likely to be almost as guilty in other areas of our own lives.  

The fact is the identity we adopt is not really who we are. In fact it is VERY small representation of our magnificence. Even ‘important’ labels such as Mother, Husband, Soldier, Doctor, etc. actually do us a disservice if we limit ourselves only to the parameters those labels imply.

Regarding prospecting; it is your ego that struggles with picking up the phone. It is so worried about being rejected because that ‘threatens’ the ego. The ego wants total control and since that isn’t possible it generates a mental environment that is always in turmoil.

What to do: Start ’stepping back’ from the dialog of the mental chatter and recognize these thoughts are like passing clouds. Observe them rather than ‘own’ them. Recognize that feeling of judgment, fear, shyness, etc. are not actually of your real self – but are projections from your ego.

Treat these projections as you would fog – and walk right through them. God has given you the desires that live in your heart. We need to consider ourselves God’s Ambassadors and use our Faith to stand up to the ego’s imagined fears and limitations. As with anything, you will need to be persistent with using this new perspective. Soon it will become second nature. 

Next: Begin ’seeing past’ people reactions and responses. Just because someone says ‘No’ to the idea of joining you team means nothing in the grand scheme of things – unless you allow your ego to label it as something bad.

If you need to – invent a reason why that ‘no’ was actually a good thing for you – then move on. Your spirit will grow lighter and ever more attractive to others because you’ll becoming from a place of peaceful detachment rather than being needy.

Our society is built all around servicing the needs of the ego. Since those needs as endless we can be assured that our egos will continue rear their head and shout their demands, opinions, and fears. How do we overcome this?

My suggestion is to go the Oprah’s website and review the recorded segments of ‘A New Earth’ show. Read Eckhart Tolle’s book, ‘A New Earth’ and invest time in wallowing in the information in order to embody it permanently.

Distractions occuring in your home business are not a question of ‘if ‘- they are a question of when, how often, how long, etc., etc.

They come in the form of friends dropping by just because they know you’re home. They come the form of phone calls from friends, telemarketers, peers. They come in the form of those little chores that call out for attention. They come in the form of busy work.

Distrations are a major concern because if you don’t learn to control them - they will control you and your ability to get the important work done. By important work I’m refering to the projects that will move your business forward in a meaningful way.

What is ‘meaningful’?

A meaningful task or project carries the kind of significance that would warrent a call home to your spouse to announce. Examples: “The book has been sent to the editor”, “The software is ready to ship”, “The website finished and is up and running”, etc.

Many of the distractions that happen aren’t planned for, so we typically don’t  handle them well; which simply means we ‘react’ to them rather than ‘respond’. When we react to anything we are ’shooting from the hip’, and we want to approach business as a sharpshooter instead.

We can do that, and end up working smarter than harder (sniper) by actually planning ahead in order to be as prepared as possible for when the distractions occur.

That might include turning your phone off for a specific period every day in order to concentrate on that key project. It might mean leaving your emails unread until the late afternoon. It might require that you close the door to your office during a scheduled period each day. Think this through.

One of the most important business habits you can adopt is the habit of creating a ‘Top Six’ list for each day. These are the tasks that are most meaningful interms of moving your business forward for the long term.

Practice focusing on achieving those six targets before moving on to putting out fires or handling  those distractions. 

Once you have raised your awareness to how often and how serious your ‘distrations problem’ is - you’ll be shocked. Shocked about how little of the truly important stuff gets done.

And once you’ve made the decsion to start working smarter ; the temptations to work on the fires and distrations first will come fast and furious. That’s where you need to stick with it and commit to reversing the tide over the long haul.

Firmly demand that people respect your time. For meetings; ask for and stick to specific agendas and promise to do the same for them. Most people would agree that they are already far too busy so they will likely  appreciate your methodology once they get the hand of it.

Dr. W.Deming stated a long time ago: “The first responsibility of a business - is to stay in business”. By controling distractions and implementing your ‘Top Six’ daily list you will make a Quantum Leap forward to having a successful home based business.
