Are You Part Of An Empowering Team? - Part 1
“Together Everyone Achieves More”
The benefits of being part of a team are numerous, and so valuable in helping you live your life on purpose. Yet, this concept is not always explicitly taught - we often learn about teams through trial and error. If you have had a negative experience, you may be reluctant to participate in one.
However, I have personally come to realize that in order to achieve any of my big dreams and live my ideal life, that I need to be a part of a team - I cannot go it alone.
Let’s first of all define Team. In this world of technology and communication, the definition of Team has certainly expanded.
Frequently what comes to mind at the mention of the word Team is a sports team. With the 2008 Olympics that have just unfolded, we certainly saw many examples of teams - a number of persons forming one of the sides in a game or contest.
However, in the context of sports, the athlete participating in an individual sport is also part of a team - his personal team including nutritionist, physiotherapist, coach, sponsor and so on - a group organized to work together towards a common goal.
Any athlete will tell you he or she needed each of those different individuals to help him or her achieve their medal.
A family unit can be a powerful team - if they respect each other, encourage and support one another in becoming all they can be. I for one, certainly consider my husband and our two sons to be a most valuable part of my team. They assist not only in physical tasks around our home, but will give me very valuable feedback on the work that I am involved in, they discuss concepts and ideas, mastermind with me, and so on.
There are teams in the workplace. Sometime these are referred to as departments, branches, offices, and units. Today we even have virtual teams, where folks are living all over the world, and perhaps do their work from the comfort of a home office. Technology allows them to communicate effortlessly and with ease.
People do not have to be interacting face to face to be part of a team and they certainly do not have to know each other well, in order to get the job done or the mission accomplished. There are many online communities that form teams because they have a common interest and passion.
Furthermore, I have come to consider some authors in the field of personal development to be a part of my team, though I have never met them, and they would have no clue who I am if you were to mention my name. Yet, their writings have influenced me greatly. I continue to go back to their work for references and to grow deeper in my understanding of various concepts.
Today the question for you to ponder is: Which teams am I a part of - am I actually part of a team that I may not have given that title to?
Next time we will explore the numerous benefits of aligning with a powerful team
